Communication strategy: 5 minutes to understand what it is and what it's for
Don't understand the importance of a communication strategy? Have you already implemented communication tools but don't have a strategy? Or have you already tried to create one but don't really know how?
Communication strategy may seem lengthy, sometimes complicated, or discouraging... Some see it as a waste of time, while others don't have the budget to be supported.
I explain in 5 minutes what a communication strategy is, what it's for, and why it's essential to define one before implementing any communication actions.
What is a communication strategy?
A communication strategy is the guiding line that will meet specific objectives, such as increasing visibility, boosting sales, or launching a new product. It must be comprehensive and clear.
Each organization has its communication strategy. That's why it's necessary to define its needs and objectives beforehand. It is therefore defined upstream of the communication actions to be implemented to achieve these objectives.
Actions are described in a communication plan, which accompanies the strategy. I explain it below.
Many people launch communication tools even before they have thought about a communication strategy, due to lack of time, budget, or trend effect.
But beware, actions carried out without coherence with each other can yield poorer results, and even become more expensive. The strategy may seem lengthy to establish and may be perceived as a waste of time, but beware! It is actually a considerable time saver for the following company actions.
If you're still not convinced that a communication strategy is essential for developing your business, I explain why you need a communication strategy.
Why have a communication strategy?
A communication strategy will allow you to:
have an overall vision of your communication,
define your objectives well,
know how to implement actions to achieve your objectives,
coordinate actions with each other,
adapt to your market by choosing appropriate tools,
better target your communication campaigns,
control the periodicity of your actions and your budget,
and know the scope of your actions.
The communication strategy helps you have an overview. It allows you to develop communication actions consistent with your objectives while being organized and anticipating certain changes if necessary. Depending on your business sector, the communication strategy may, for example, integrate a crisis communication component to be more responsive to a crisis. The communication strategy is therefore a guarantee of success. To find out how to create a communication strategy, you can also read my article on this subject.
Your strategy will therefore identify the vision and general guidelines upstream of the communication plan. But what is a communication plan?
What is a communication plan?
The communication plan brings together the actions to be implemented to achieve your objectives. Generally, it is done over a year to give you a clear and comprehensive view of the progress of the actions.
It allows you to plan actions (how much time is needed for each step, when is the launch of a communication campaign scheduled, what is the deadline, etc.). You can also use a timeline to have an overview and determine priority actions.
Therefore, key elements must be integrated into the communication plan, such as the objective to be achieved, the action to be taken and the communication channel used, identified targets, chosen period, budget planned...
The communication plan finally allows you to track the work done, but also any adjustments. Do not hesitate to modify the action plan because it evolves constantly depending on the target market and the results of the actions, which are to be retained, improved, or deleted.
